Good Art – Art Talk with Shagufta

Ever wondered how the art world separates the good art from the not so great art? Ever stood before a painting that has been widely applauded and thought to yourself what the fuss is all about? For obvious reasons it’s far easier to distinguish the quality of representational art than contemporary and modern art.

Art that is unique and eye catching has a simple and rigorous beauty that commands your gaze and thoughts whenever you look at it. Art that connects with you on some incomprehensible deeply personal level. Art that is original and oozing passion and very distinctly identifiable with the artists style.

A powerful piece of art can be the one where the intensity of the person making it comes through. It is uncompromisingly honest, unselfconscious, bold and unapologetically selfish in a sense that it comes from the artists soul and doesn’t seek approval of others.

Yet art has a purpose and that purpose is to interest its audience. Good art is art that achieves this purpose. Some art will please its viewers, some will shock and some will scream out loud with its outrageousness. But good art has to be engaging.

The only way to develop an eye for art is to become an observer and hone your eye. The more you look at art, visit galleries and watch out for art shows, the more you can distinguish between the practiced carefree strokes and the dabbling of the amateur hand.
