All of us typical artists have a way of underselling ourselves and what we do. We aren’t really the aggressive marketing people and are ingrained with a certain amount of modesty. To add to that, selling art is not the easiest thing in the world. So time and again we tell ourselves to stop dreaming that we can pay our bills earning through art and get a ‘Real’ job. We buy into the myth of the ‘starving artist’. How about we work to dispel this myth and start creating more and more ‘abundant artists’?
- So here are a few tips to get you started.
- Don’t just immerse yourself in your studio and forget about the business of art! Spend time on learning to market yourself.
- Put your art out there as often as you can. Work on your online presence. Facebook, Instagram, twitter, Pinterest….flood them with your art.
- Learn to talk about your art with flair and build interest around it. Good art is supposed to be a conversation starter.
- Socialize with the art world. Be seen in every art event and mingle with art lovers. Strike up a conversation with them.
- Work on building your brand and image. Dress up well. Learn to style yourself to perfection. Break the cliché’ of the ‘jhola clad unruly’ artist.
- Work on researching and developing a business strategy. There’s a lot to learn from master marketers like Picasso and Hussain.
