A new consciousness for public art

Public art has tremendous power to create a lasting impression on its viewers. Culture and art are what lend character to a city. Cities all around the world are turning to art to add new energy around public spaces. Art impacts us in a huge way. There is a need to sculpt a new consciousness for public art in the city. Art patrons, corporate houses and citizen groups need to come forth to “artify” the city with contemporary art like a lot of cities in the west.

Nagpur is a laid back city with so much to boast of but not much to offer. For those who find that statement utterly contradictory, let me explain… We are at the heart of the country, we are the gateway to tiger land, we are the possessors of
zero mile, we are the orange city…yet what do we have to offer to the tourist who comes here? Most of the people who come looking for oranges have to suffice by looking at one giant orange that adds little to the aesthetics of the city. People who come looking for zero mile can be sorely disappointed by a small horse sculpture with a tiny garden which is overpowered by the hostel hoardings and the sad remains of the petrol pump that shut down and there is not much that speaks of Nagpur being the gateway to tiger land either.

We do see the creativity creep in these days wandering along the streets of Nagpur. But there is a need to create ease in gaining funding & gettingpermissions required to create such beautiful pieces of art around the city.  The idea is to generate a huge public interest in favour of public art.
