Selfish Art – Art Talk with Shagufta

In the words of Oscar Wilde, “Art is the most intense form of individualism the world has ever known.” They say that for a strong piece of art to emerge, it must carry a part of the artists’ soul in it. It must stem from deep within. For it to do that, it becomes essential that the creator be totally unaware, ignorant and even defiant of the current trends and likes and dislikes of the world. They must be so single mindedly driven by their own passion that the work of art rebels against all stereotypical cliches.

The artist needs to be so blinded by his own ideology that he shuts off the rest. Making the art that emerges a completely individualistic extension of their own being. Totally overcome by their own madness.

This for me has been the most difficult part of the journey as an artist. For me to be a good artist I need to unlearn things I have been conditioned to believe and learn to be more instinctive and dive deep into my soul. The art that you create has to be thoroughly self-indulgent and self- centred for it to stand out and scream to the world and have a strong voice of its own which becomes difficult to be ignored. Find your deep inner voice and indulge in selfishly creating works of art that are not afraid to be deeply opinionated and rebellious. Then spend time finding your tribe, your own collectors who want to see more of your art. In the end our survival does depend on the validation by our collectors but make sure you don’t dim your light for them.
